Percha Dam State Park

No short text A quiet campground along the banks of the Rio Grande. If you come here, you will camp under a canopy of cottonwood trees and see lots of birds. People who enjoy fishing can catch their dinner nearby. Kids can play in the playground.

General tent notes: The non-electricity area has lots of good tent sites. No tent pads.

General notes: The campground is under a canopy of large cottonwoods. Unfortunately, all are in poor health.
Campground facilities: water, trash can(s), vault toilet(s), flush toilet(s), cooking grill, fire pit, showers (They were broken in April 2011.), electrical hookups, water hookups, sewer hookups, RV dump station, reservation sites.
Campground attractions: hiking (A trail leads along the river through the bosque.), wildlife (Percha Dam State Park is notable for its birds and is stop 34 on the New Mexico Birding Tour.), fishing, river, year-round access.

When we visited it:

Date: 2011-04-08
Cleanliness: 9. Site 9 only had three small pieces of litter. Site 20 only had six.
General notes: The showers were out of order.

Getting to the campground:

From I-25, take the exit for NM 187; a sign on the interstate indicates this is the exit for Percha Dam State Park.

Head southwest on NM 187 for 0.9 mi. Turn left at the signed road to the park.

The road ends in the park after 1.2 miles.

About the campground:

Campsite 15, pictured here, is representative of the sites with utilities. It has a shade structure over the picnic table, a pull-through parking spot, a cooking grill, and the electricity and water hookups. There are trees, although not all of the electric sites have shade from them all day.
As you can see from this overview of the campsites with utilities, the campground is fairly open.

Some of the non-utility sites look special, such as this one in the bosque beside the river.

Interestingly, the non-utility sites have no numbers.

Some of the non-utility campsites look like clones of the ones with utilities, except that they have good tent sites nearby.

And, some of the tent sites are pretty plain.
