- Water (amount depends on the length of the hike and the heat, at least 2 liters per person)
- Maps of the area
- Hiking guides for the area (e.g., pages printed from ExploreNM.com)
- Sun hat
- Sunscreen
- Instep crampons
- Sunglasses
- Lip balm
- Camera equipment
- List of needed plant photos
- Binoculars
- Bug repellent
- Compass
- GPS with memory available for the track
- Spare batteries for the GPS
- Thermometer
- Whistle
- Rain gear
- Polypro or other warm shirt for layering
- Hiking poles
- Warmer clothes (if hiking in mountains)
- Guides to the local nature (e.g. geology, plants, birds, etc)
- Hand lens for looking at the small local nature
- Lunch and some snacks
- Plastic bag for trash
- Pocket knife
- Caribiner
- Cell phone (do not count on it working in backwoods areas)
- FRS or GMRS radios (maybe)
- Spare batteries for FRS or GMRS radios
- Paper and 2 pens for notes
- Palmtop computer (maybe)
- Toilet paper and Ziplock bag for carrying the toilet paper out
- Blister powder
- Hunter orange hat, vest, and/or jacket (if hunting season)
