First-aid kit for the truck
This first-aid kit is meant to be more complete than what we carry when
hiking.
Nothing beats training; go attend a local Red Cross class. As Denis
McKeon put it, ``Knowledge is lightweight and doesn't take up much
room.''
General:
First aid reference book
sunscreen
tweezers
2 pr gloves, disposable surgical
sharp scissors
4 3" x 4" pieces of moleskin
2 packets Gatorade(r) or ERG(r) powder, each to make 1/2 liter
1 space blanket
Stings & bites:
tick extractor
Ammonium hydroxide (e.g. AfterBite(r))
extractor, insect venom
1 15 cc bottle Sting-Eeze(r) solution
bug repellant
Cuts, punctures:
1 30 cc bottle mild liquid soap
8 oz. saline solution (sterile solution to wash wounds}
6 alcohol prep pads, in foil, or other antiseptic wipe
1 15 cc bottle povadone-iodine solution (e.g., Betadine(r))
3 1 g foil packets bacitracin or povadone-iodine ointment
ointment, antibiotic, best if can resist heat degredation
first aid cream
1 3" by 5 yards (stretched) conforming roller gauze (e.g., Kling(r))
1 1" (by at least 10 yards) waterproof adhesive tape
3 small prepackaged units of tincture of benzoin (This was added due
to the great difficulty of getting tape or even Bandaids(tm)
to stick in wet weather.)
assorted band-aids, including 2"x4", knuckle, 3/4"
several gauze pads, 2", 3", 4"-square
1 gauze compress
clear adherent dressing (e.g., Spiroflex(tm), Tegaderm(tm), OpSite(tm))52
5 medium-size "suture strips" or steri-strips (better than butterfly
strips, sterile and can be placed over the wound, rather than
straddling it)
Burns:
"second skin" dressing
Water Jel (used for burns)
Aloe gel for sunburn
Sprains, breaks:
2 heat pack, instant
2 cold pack, instant
2 splint, wire or other flexible
4 Triangular Bandages, 40" ones
1 3" by 5 yards (stretched) elastic bandage (e.g., Ace(r), Coban(r), Vet-Wrap(r))
GI:
12 antacid/antigas tablets
16 Lomotil or mmodium(r) anti-diarrheal tablets
EENT:
eye pad
sterile saline (listed above)
Cough, Cold, Allergy Etc:
8 12-hour sustained-release pseudoephedrine tablets 120 mg.
(e.g., Sudafed(r))
8 12-hour sustained-release chlorpheniramine tablets 8
mg. (e.g., Chlor-Trimeton(r))
8 dextromethorphan-containing cough drops (e.g., Hold(r))
Benadryl, 50mg tablets
hydrocortisone cream/ointment/roll-on
benadryl or caladryl cream
Medicine
30 Aspirin, 325mg tablets
30 Acetaminophen, 325mg tablets
30 Ibuprofen, 200mg tablets
